How to verify a GIA or IGI diamond report.
A grading report is only worth something if it belongs to the stone in front of you. Checking takes a few minutes — here is how.
Check the report online
Both major labs keep a public database of every report they issue. Enter the report number on GIA Report Check or the IGI report verification page, and you should see the same grades, weight and measurements as the paper or PDF you were given. If the number does not exist, or the details differ, stop there.

Match the laser inscription
Most GIA and IGI graded diamonds have the report number laser-inscribed on the girdle, the thin edge of the stone. It is invisible to the eye but readable under a 10× loupe or a microscope. The number on the girdle should match the report exactly. An inscription can be added or polished off, so treat it as one check among several, not proof on its own.
Match the measurements and plot
- Weight: weigh the stone; it should match the report to the hundredth of a carat.
- Measurements: diameter (or length and width) and depth in millimetres should match closely.
- Shape and cut: the shape, proportions and cut grade should look right for the stone.
- Clarity plot: on reports that include a plotting diagram, the main inclusions should be where the diagram shows them.
Red flags
- A report number that is missing from the lab's online database.
- Weight or measurements that do not match.
- A "certificate" from an unknown lab presented as if it were GIA or IGI.
- Reluctance to share the report number before payment.
- A price far below the market for the grades on the report.

Parcels and smaller stones
Melee and many stones under about 0.30 ct are traded without individual reports and graded as parcels by colour and clarity range. For those, the protection is the supplier: buy from a manufacturer that grades consistently and will hold the same specification across orders. Every certified stone we sell can be checked on the lab's own website before you pay.
