Fancy colour — Natural

Fancy colour diamonds, cut in Surat.

Champagne, cognac and yellow natural diamonds — as single stones, matched pairs and calibrated parcels. Natural pinks appear only occasionally and are sourced on request.

Champagne and cognac

Brown diamonds are traded in the industry as champagne and cognac. Light, warm champagne tones sit beautifully in rose and yellow gold, and deeper cognac stones give a rich, whisky-coloured face. We cut them in round brilliant and fancy shapes, and match them into parcels so a jewellery line looks consistent from piece to piece.

Because champagne stones are graded by tone, the trade often describes them on a scale from light champagne to dark cognac. Tell us the tone band you need and we pair stones by eye under the same light, not just by the number on a paper.

Yellow diamonds

Natural yellow diamonds owe their colour to nitrogen in the crystal. Once a yellow is stronger than the Z end of the white colour scale it is graded as a fancy colour — from Fancy Light through Fancy and Fancy Intense to Fancy Vivid. Cushion and radiant shapes concentrate colour well, which is why so many fine yellows are cut that way.

Pink diamonds, on request

Natural pink diamonds are among the rarest gems in the trade, and supply tightened further after the Argyle mine in Australia closed in 2020. We do handle pinks, but only when the right stone comes through — tell us what you are looking for and we will tell you honestly what is available.

How we grade colour

Every fancy colour stone is assessed for hue, tone and saturation under controlled daylight before it reaches the desk. Stones above 0.30 ct can be sent to GIA or IGI for a coloured diamond report, which confirms the colour is natural. For the full story, read our guide to fancy colour diamond grading.
